It’s Friday night. No better yet, it’s Saturday night and you suddenly get a text message from your buddies saying “let’s hit up a bar!”

Or how about, you finally managed to get that confirmation on a time and place with your hot date and it happens to be at a bar?

If you don’t drink or never drank at a bar especially on that date. It could seem awkward as your not sure what to order or what’s a good choice for the first time drinker.

What should you drink at the bar for the first time?

You got the bartender’s attention to take your order so what’s next? Most bars that serve alcohol should have a menu placed on the counter. These are generally the signature or the popular cocktails created by the bartender and generally a good place to start.

In some cases there may not be any menu and unless you have ordered before and know a couple of cocktails or beers by name. It may be difficult to know what to order. Your best bet is ask the bartender and get his/her suggestions.

A bartender is no different then any restaurant server of coffee barista taking your order. If you had a question about a entree you would ask the server about it wouldn’t you? same does for the bartender. They are there to recommend and help you.

Most bartenders should have gone to some sort of bartending school or training so their knowledge on alcoholic drinks should be reliable.

First drink for beginners

For beginners I normally recommend they start off with a more fruity and sweet cocktail. Something along the lines of Malibu Pineapple. What’s that you may ask? The main liquor is Caribbean Rum, called Malibu which comes in different flavors such as coconut, pineapple, and original.

Rum!? isn’t that what Jack Sparrow from Pirate’s of the Caribbean drinks? I’m sure Jack the Sparrow character is drinking some sort of aged rum, but heck that’s a movie.

Anyways, the bartender will generally mix 1 to 2 oz of Caribbean rum in a highball glass filled with ice. The rest is filled with Pineapple juice which is what makes this drink and sweet and tasty for beginners.

Will I get drunk end up like Jack Sparrow? I highly doubt it as this cocktail is majority pineapple juice and Malibu rum is only 21% alcohol content. With all the pineapple juice and ice added. It will probably dilute the alcohol by half it’s content making it 10.5% which is far less than wine. Give it a try!

Ordering beer for beginners

With so many brewing companies out in existence it can get overwhelming on what beer is good for beginners? Generally speaking if your not much of a beer person you should go with a light amber type of beer such as Michelobe Ultra with a light percentage of 4.2% or any Coors/Bud/Miller Lite which also is 4.2%

A rule of thumb any beer under 5% are considered light on the alcohol content and is a good way to enjoy the beer without feeling overpowered with it’s taste.

The Bartender and ordering at the bar

Depending on the time of day you go to the bar. Your wait time to be served by the bartender could vary. Do understand the bartender has to service the horde of patrons who also want to order.

While at times your impatiently waiting to get your turn. It may feel the bartender is ignoring you. Rest assure they’re not. Multi tasking behind a bar counter can sometimes get hectic so cut them a break if this happens.

They will appreciate your understanding and most likely make you a great cocktail. You could help the bartender and get your order out faster by getting out your I.D card and standby. This reduces the time of being ask by the bartender to verify your age before being served.

Since the age limit in the states is 21, don’t get offended if your being asked to show your ID.

Wave politely at the bartender when he or she is within view of you to let them know your interested in order. If your just standing at the counter doing nothing. The Bartender can’t tell if your just hanging out or watching the flat screen should there be one like a sports bar.

After you have the full attention of the bartender and to some degree followed the instructions mentioned earlier. You are on your way to ordering a drink and hopefully enjoy it and your company.

Tipping the Bartender and etiquette

As mentioned a bartender provides services as any restaurant server would. If you felt the bartender has provided excellent services and went beyond taking care of your needs. Show them appreciation by dropping a dollar or two.

A general rule I follow is leaving $1 per drink per person. There have been times when I’m feeling generous during Happy hours when it’s slow of patrons. I would immediately off the bat tip the bartender $5 upon greeting me.

This gesture always catches them off guard at least for my experience. The bartender will appreciate your generosity and will go out of their way to serve and ensure your drink is to your satisfaction.

Often times after showing some appreciation for the bartender with a generous tip. The bartender will make your drink extra strong without being charged extra.

Hope this has helped some of you out there who should now feel confident showing up at a bar like a regular. Have fun!
